UAE Announces It Will Sponsor Fourth United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit in 2024

H.E. Ambassador Lana Nusseibeh, Assistant Minister for Political Affairs and UAE Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN, announced, at the instruction of her country’s leadership, that the UAE will sponsor the fourth UN Chiefs of Police Summit in 2024. The announcement was made during the third United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit (UNCOPS 2022) on Thursday at UN Headquarters in New York, which brought together ministers, chiefs of police, and senior representatives of regional and professional policing organizations. Ambassador Nusseibeh delivered her intervention alongside UAE Mission Police Adviser Lt. Colonel Saeed Aldhaheri and a delegation from the Ministry of Interior.

“UNCOPS has long played an integral role in strengthening international peace, security, and development, and the UAE is proud to support the Summit’s fourth iteration,” stated Ambassador Nusseibeh.

Ambassador Nusseibeh also highlighted the importance of community-oriented policing and the critical role of law enforcement professionals at both the local and multilateral levels. “We should all appreciate the constant innovation and improvement that our police officers – and all law enforcement professionals – strive for in their work,” she stated.

Ambassador Nusseibeh added, “Effective law enforcement enables access to justice, strengthens social cohesion, and makes us all feel safe and secure. To do so, it needs to be gender-responsive, evidence-based, and field-tested.”

Ambassador Nusseibeh further elaborated on the UN’s role in supporting local policing efforts, especially in countries emerging from conflict: “What else could be more valuable for host countries than assistance in strengthening the capacities of local police to protect civilians, investigate crimes, and deliver on broader law enforcement responsibilities?”

Additionally, Ambassador Nusseibeh highlighted the UAE’s commitment to strengthening global policing capabilities, including through embracing smart technologies. “Based on our own recent learnings in this emerging field, we strongly encourage our partners – including in the UN community – to embrace the new opportunities presented by technology,” she stated.
