Turbulence on American Airlines flight to Nashville injures eight

Turbulence injured eight people on their way to Nashville.

The passengers were on American Airlines flight 3609 from Tampa to the Nashville International Airport when they hit unexpected turbulence, according to an American Airlines news release. The plane was diverted to Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport.

“There were, at the time, as many as 10 people who thought they might have some kind of injury,” said Kim Hunt, a spokesperson for the Birmingham Airport Authority.

The plane landed safely just before 3:30 in Birmingham, according to the news release. Hunt said at least six emergency vehicles responded to help the passengers. At that point, responders took six passengers and two flight attendants to the hospital, the news release said.

The airline plans to send another plane to Birmingham this evening, Hunt said, which will bring the remainder of the passengers to their final destination in Nashville. According to the news release, a total of 56 individuals, including 52 passengers were on the flight, including two pilots and two flight attendants.
