Tokyo: Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic advanced to the final of the Tokyo Open (WTA 500) for the second time in her career, after defeating American Sofia Kenin in a hard-fought semifinal on Friday. Bencic prevailed 7-6, 3-6, 6-2 to book her place in the championship match.
According to Qatar News Agency, the Swiss star last reached the Tokyo final ten years ago, when she finished runner-up to Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska. In Saturday’s final, Bencic will face Czech Linda Noskova, who advanced after her semifinal opponent, Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina, was forced to withdraw due to a back injury.
Bencic, the Tokyo Olympic gold medalist, will be aiming for her second title of the season, following her victory at the Abu Dhabi Open in February. Noskova, meanwhile, will be seeking to claim the second WTA title of her career. The Czech player was runner-up earlier this month at the China Open, where she lost to American Amanda Anisimova, and captured her maiden title in Monterrey last year.
