Saudi Film “Hijra” Wins Top Honors at International Women’s Film Festival

Sale:The Saudi film "Hijra" has emerged as the grand prize winner in the Feature Films Official Competition category at the 19th International Women's Film Festival held in Sale, Morocco.

According to Qatar News Agency, the film, directed by Shahad Ameen, also earned accolades for best actress, awarded to Khairiah Nathmy and Lamar Faden.

Shot across eight cities in Saudi Arabia, "Hijra" explores the narratives of migrants who decided to remain in the country after performing the Hajj.

The festival's jury bestowed its special award on the Moroccan film "Calle Malaga," directed by Maryam Touzani. Additionally, Tunisian/French director Lila Pinell received the First Feature award for her film "Shana."

In the Documentary Film Competition, the Moroccan film "Out of School" by Hind Bensari took the top prize. Meanwhile, "Double or Quits" by Moroccan Rachida Saadi was recognized as the best Moroccan film advocating for women's causes.

The closing ceremony also paid tribute to Canadian director and writer Anais Barbeau-Lavalette and Moroccan actress Ibtissam Laaroussi.
