Saturn to Illuminate Qatar’s Night Sky During Opposition

Doha:Qatar Saturn will appear unusually bright in the night sky over Qatar on Sunday evening, October 4, as it reaches opposition to the Sun.

According to Qatar News Agency, this astronomical event will bring Saturn to its closest point to Earth, approximately 8.43 astronomical units away. An astronomical unit is roughly 150 million kilometers.

This opposition will allow Saturn to be visible to the unaided eye across Qatar throughout the night, from Sunday evening until sunrise on Monday. Residents can observe Saturn rising above the eastern horizon shortly after sunset at 519 p.m. local time in Doha.

The planet will be at its zenith over Qatar at 1124 p.m., reaching 67 degrees above the southern horizon. It will then continue its movement until it sets near sunrise on Monday.

Dr. Bashir Marzouq, an astronomy expert at the Qatar Calendar House, noted that Saturn's opposition is an annual event. The last occurrence was on September 21, 2025, and the next will be on October 18, 2027.

During opposition, the centers of Saturn, Earth, and the Sun align, positioning Earth between Saturn and the Sun. On this day, Saturn will also be at its farthest point from the Sun, at 9.77 astronomical units away.

Although visible as a bright yellow object to the naked eye, observing Saturn's iconic rings requires telescopes or other astronomical instruments. Saturn is the second-largest planet in the solar system, with a diameter approximately ten times that of Earth.
