Russia Says Peacekeepers Killed after Vehicle Fired On in Nagorno-Karabakh Region

Russia announced Wednesday that a number of Russian peacekeepers in Nagorno-Karabakh region were killed when the car they were travelling in was fired on, without clarifying how many of its troops died.

“While returning from a Russian peacekeeping observation post near the village of Dzhanyatag, a car containing Russian military personnel came under small arms fire,” said Russia’s ministry of defence. “As a result of the shelling, the Russian servicemen in the car were killed.” Azerbaijan announced a ceasefire in Nagorno-Karabakh on Wednesday to combat what it referred to as “terrorism” in the region, following an appeal made by representatives of the Armenian peoples in the region.

Armenia and Azerbaijan had previously engaged in two wars over the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh. The most recent conflict occurred in 2020 and ended with a fragile truce. However, the two countries have not yet been able to reach a lasting peaceful settlement following these recent military confrontations, despite mediation efforts led by the European Union, the United States, and Russia, each separately.
