Quantum Processor Operated in Space for the First Time

Vienna:Scientists from the University of Vienna in Austria have successfully operated a quantum processor in space, marking a pioneering achievement in the field of quantum computing. This experiment sets the stage for processing satellite-collected data directly in orbit before it is transmitted to Earth.

According to Qatar News Agency, the quantum processor utilizes photons to convey quantum information. These photons are generated in pairs and directed into a network of optical paths etched onto a tiny glass chip.

Quantum computers are known for their sensitivity to environmental conditions such as heat, vibrations, and electromagnetic interference, which can lead to operational errors. During the experiment, the team encountered challenges including the malfunction of half of the light detectors, interference from sunlight and space radiation, and a reduction in laser power. Despite these obstacles, they successfully observed quantum interference.

This experiment is a step towards the development of space-based quantum computers that can compress and categorize data in orbit, potentially resolving issues related to the transmission of vast amounts of data collected by satellites.

The quantum computer was launched into space on June 23, 2025, aboard a Falcon 9 rocket and positioned in low Earth orbit at an altitude of approximately 510 kilometers.
