On September 30, the world celebrates the international translation day to raise awareness of the important role that the language play to develop our society and bringing nations together. In this context, we reviewed several QU translator Specialists Opinions about the significance of learning the right skills to translate.
Musa Abu Huzaima, Acting Department Head of English, committed: “the foundation program at QU has focused on enrolled student at the university. We prepare the student academically with the necessary skills to study their majors in English. Our faculty employ the latest ways to teach the English languages in the best way to prepare student to continue learning on their own life. The foundation program also provides appropriate academic support to student during their studies by holding workshops aimed to provide struggling student to achieve their goals.”
He adds, “Studying translation is very important in making the future. Perhaps translation is one of the oldest models of professions inherited. History goes back in development languages and the translation movement to Abbasid era in Baghdad and Umayyad era in Andalusia. The Arab-Islamic civilization was a maker of knowledge by encouraging the translation movement from Latin, Greek, Person language. Because of this movement the European started to translate book from Arabic to European languages and many European University have based their teaching and research on what Arabs have achieved.”
Dhafir Kasassbeh, Lecturer of English, said: “The increasing global interaction has fueled the importance of translation as a central field of knowledge in academia, between cultures, and languages in twenty-first-century societies. When languages interact with each other in many areas such as commerce, tourism, art, politics, scientific research, defense, and security, it is natural for one to affect and be affected by the other. It is also clear that translation has become a more integrated and dynamic tool for effecting change, facilitating expansion, and paving the way for development in various fields such as information technology and the dissemination of globalization itself. Consequently, translation has taken a pioneering role in connecting different cultures, organizations, businesses, and societies around the world.”
Karima Ben Abbes, Lecturer of English, said: “recently, education has proven the urgency to learn English to compete in various fields such as education, science, technology, economic. Learning English requires mastering four skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing and to improve the skills it is require an interactive material, talented teachers and environment where student can demonstrate their ideas and think critically. QU English lectures are aware of the importance of these key factors to enhance English langue skill. In this context, they use a variety of interactive tools such as games, role – playing games, presentation, critical reading and technology tools that will help the student to develop their language skills.
Mondher Chaabane, Lecturer of English, said: “the foundation program at QU seeks to educate students about the importance of accuracy in translation and information dissemination this was reflected in the organization of training sessions, conference aimed to develop students skills in translation and their ability to disseminate cultural heritage.”
Atef Mohammed, Section Head of Translation and Interpretation, said: “translation is one of the main tools for understanding& communicating between different people and different languages. Accordingly, translation constitutes the most important bridge of communication between nations to achieve a better understanding of dialogues, cultures, meetings, and cultural, scientific, and literary products. We can imagine the absence of translators who speak different languages. What the situation will be when a certain dialogue tasks place between people?. Therefore, translation has played an important role in transferring sciences since ancient times between different countries and civilizations. QU has established a translation department in communication and public relations to improve the language service to improve the language services provided to the university community.”
Dr. Ahmed Al-Abbasi, Translator/ Interpreter, Communication and Public Relations Department, committed “translation is an effective channel of communication and the main bridge of communication between different cultures. Many scientific awards and academic institutions concerned with translation and translators have been established in various countries. Qatar has organized many annual periodic international events and conferences in the field of translation. Gamal Mohamed, Translator/ Interpreter, Communication and Public Relations Department, said: “In any translation, the problems that arise up are probably not simply linguistic but socio-cultural. Hence, just like the research, the translation process must tackle the challenges posed by the diverse problems that continually arise in trying to provide a reliable version in one language of texts produced in another. It is anticipated that the translator may encounter many difficulties and obstacles during the translation processes; because of the many differences between languages—naturally, s/he endeavors to tackle those problems subtly to produce a consistent quality translation. The translator may face the lack of an appropriate equivalent word in the target language during the translation process, which creates the probability of rendering ambiguous conceptions in translation. Hence, the translator proceeds to different strategies to overcome the non-equivalence problem, to meet the expectations of the target text reader by producing the precise conception held by the non-equivalent word of the source text. For this reason and many others, we will find the translator may convert to a researcher in the target language culture.”
Khalid Alnoman, Translator/Interpreter, Communication and Public Relations Department, said: “Since the human civilization begin translation played an important role and its growing very accelerating role in our time, because of the huge digital and scientific revolution, especially in communication between people and institution. One of the important tasks for translation is peace-keeping the world, as it contributes to accurate drafting of projects and peace treaties to be understandable and acceptable to all partners. Translation also plays a critical role in multination and multicultural companies & organizations to promote their products and services all over the world. In addition, the transmission of news requires accurate and certified translation of news coming from different sources such as radio stations and local, international news agencies. Translation role extends to the cultural exchange between civilizations in different forms such as art, music, cinema and literature, poetry, songs, and religious so that people can communicate with each other. And interact positively with each other.”
