Qatar’s Shura Council Participates in Key IPU Meetings in Tanzania

Arusha:Qatar's Shura Council is actively participating in the Inter-Parliamentary Union's (IPU) 153rd Assembly and 218th Governing Council meetings in Arusha, Tanzania.

According to Qatar News Agency, the meetings are themed "Enhancing good governance and empowering communities through inclusivity, trust and opportunities for all." Leading the Qatari delegation is HE the Deputy Speaker, Dr. Hamda bint Hassan Al Sulaiti, who is also a member of the IPU's Executive Committee.

During her address to the assembly, Dr. Al Sulaiti emphasized Qatar's commitment to good governance as a means to achieve sustainable development and community stability, under the leadership of HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani. She highlighted Qatar's progress in legislative and institutional frameworks, digital transformation, and community involvement in development and policy-making, along with efforts in education, anti-corruption, and promoting integrity on regional and global fronts.

Dr. Al Sulaiti noted that the session's theme aligns with parliamentary work, emphasizing the integrated nature of good governance, community empowerment, inclusion, trust-building, and providing opportunities for all, which are fundamental for social justice and sustainable development. She pointed out the critical role of parliaments in realizing these goals through legislation, oversight, and resource allocation, ensuring engagement from all societal segments, especially youth, women, and people with disabilities.

She further stressed the importance of community involvement in decision-making, in line with Sustainable Development Goal 16 and the Doha Declaration. A draft resolution on inclusive social development and the rights of persons with disabilities was highlighted as a step towards implementing international commitments into practical policies.

Dr. Al Sulaiti also discussed the connection between development, stability, security, and peace, stressing the need for civilian protection and adherence to international law. She recalled the regional conflicts' impact on civilians and critical infrastructure, advocating for the emergency item submitted by Qatar and the Arab Group, which seeks to uphold ceasefire agreements and support peacebuilding efforts.

The Shura Council's delegation is actively engaged in various meetings, including those of the IPU Executive Committee, the Bureau of Women Parliamentarians, and the Forum of Women Parliamentarians. Additionally, they are participating in coordination meetings with Gulf, Arab, and Islamic groups, addressing parliamentary strategies for promoting rights and empowerment of people with disabilities, and discussing issues related to peace, security, sustainable development, and United Nations affairs.

The assembly runs until Friday, focusing on governance, community empowerment, inclusion, and trust-building, alongside a wide range of parliamentary and international issues.
