Qatar’s Banking Sector Serves as a Model for Arab Banks’ Growth

Tunis:Secretary-General of the Union of Arab Banks, Dr. Wissam Fattouh, emphasized the importance of Arab financial institutions learning from the successful experiences of Qatari banks. These banks' expanding presence in regional and international markets offers insights into diversifying investments and enhancing competitiveness in a dynamic global economy.

According to Qatar News Agency, Dr. Fattouh noted that the international reach of Qatari banks provides valuable lessons for Arab institutions aiming to expand beyond traditional markets. By engaging with diverse markets, these banks can better assess local conditions and refine their business strategies.

Dr. Fattouh cautioned that while learning from successful banking models like Qatar's is beneficial, these cannot be replicated wholesale across the region. Banks need to adapt proven practices to suit each market's economic and regulatory environment.

He also highlighted the role of Gulf banks, which have established strong international presences and diversified investment strategies. This success provides a platform for deeper partnerships and knowledge-sharing in the Arab banking sector.

Dr. Fattouh stressed that Arab banking development should draw on a range of successful models, including those from Jordan, Morocco, and Egypt, to improve financial services and strengthen institutional efficiency.

He further pointed to the role of technology, particularly artificial intelligence, in enhancing banking operations. However, he warned against over-reliance on AI without human oversight, emphasizing the need for banks to adopt tailored solutions and manage associated risks.

In terms of regulatory compliance, Dr. Fattouh underscored the importance of adhering to domestic and international regulations to prevent fines and reputational damage. Robust risk management systems are crucial for adapting to changes in financial technology and cross-border operations.

Lastly, he identified opportunities for Arab banks to support Syria's economic recovery through investment and financing in various sectors, urging banks to foster cooperation with Syrian financial institutions to aid reconstruction efforts. Dr. Fattouh concluded by advocating for leveraging Arab banks' collective expertise and resources to support economies in need and advance financial integration across the region.
