Qataris Elect Their Representatives For The First Time In The Shura Council

Baghdad / NINA / – Qataris flocked, today, Saturday, to polling stations to vote in the first elections for the Shura Council.

Qataris will choose 30 out of 45 members of the Shura Council, which the emir previously appointed all of its members.

284 people were nominated, distributed among 30 constituencies, including 28 women, and the Emir will appoint the other 15 members of the council.

Foreigners constitute 90 percent of Qatar’s population of 2.75 million, and they are not entitled to vote and run for office.

Candidates will have to run in the constituencies associated with their family or tribe’s place of residence in the thirties.”

Only the descendants of Qataris who were citizens in 1930 are entitled to vote and run for office.
