Doha: The Peninsula's editorial, "Celebration amid a Cry for Justice," reflects a dual narrative of celebration and concern, marking the religious rites of Eid Al-Adha while denouncing ongoing Israeli war crimes against the Palestinian people. The editorial emphasizes that celebrations should not overshadow the voices of those suffering.
According to Qatar News Agency, the newspaper highlighted the participation of over 1.67 million pilgrims in this year's Hajj, who prayed fervently for peace, particularly in the conflict-stricken regions of Gaza and the West Bank. However, the editorial notes that the atmosphere in Palestine during Eid remains overshadowed by bombing and destruction, with alarming numbers of martyrs and wounded individuals.
Al-Raya's editorial, titled "Targeting Journalists in Gaza: An Attempt to Obliterate the Palestinian Narrative," brings to light the critical issue of press freedom. It underscores what it describes as "the deliberate targeting of journalists in Gaza," which it views as an effort to obscure the truth and suppress the Palestinian narrative, thereby preventing the world from witnessing the massacres and destruction in the region.
The newspaper presented testimonies and reports from international organizations, indicating that Gaza has become one of the most perilous areas for journalists. It highlighted the deaths of numerous journalists, some of whom were killed during field coverage, while others lost their lives inside their homes, raising suspicions of a deliberate intent to silence independent media voices.
Al-Raya further emphasized that international humanitarian law, particularly the Geneva Conventions, mandates the protection of journalists as civilians. The editorial held Israel accountable for these violations and condemned the international community's silence, which it argued encourages the commission of further crimes. It stressed that the killing of journalists results not only in the loss of lives but also in the erasure of firsthand testimonies. The editorial warned that the inaction of international organizations threatens the credibility of international law and perpetuates a culture of impunity.
