Doha: Qatari newspapers highlighted in their Wednesday editorials a range of pressing regional issues, focusing on Qatar diplomatic efforts to support the resumption of negotiations between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran, while warning that any escalation would impact not only the region but also the global economy.
According to Qatar News Agency, the editorials also highlighted the US decision to remove Syria from its list of State Sponsors of Terrorism, describing the move as a new chapter for Syria reintegration into the international community, the restoration of its standing, and the building of a stable state fulfilling its people's aspirations for security, stability, and development.
Al-Arab noted that Qatar has sustained its regional diplomatic efforts and contacts with various parties to encourage a return to negotiations between Washington and Tehran. The paper emphasized that Doha has consistently warned against the broad ramifications of escalation on both regional stability and the global economy since the beginning of the crisis.
The newspaper addressed the remarks of Advisor to the Prime Minister and Official Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Majed bin Mohammed Al Ansari, during his weekly media briefing, in which he reaffirmed Qatar's ongoing efforts to support diplomatic solutions and de-escalate tensions.
Al-Arab stressed that Qatar direct communications with Iran fall within its mediation efforts to push for the resumption of talks. This includes the necessity of ensuring freedom of navigation and maritime transit through the Strait of Hormuz in accordance with international law, achieved through political and diplomatic means that guarantee regional stability and safeguard the common interests of all parties.
For its part, Al-Watan stated that following the implementation of extensive US economic sanctions against Iran, all scenarios appear to be on the table, including military intervention, noted US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth.
The newspaper pointed out that negotiations remain viable, given the previously signed memorandum of understanding, which established a framework to build on.
Al-Watan noted that the new US sanctions aim to completely isolate Iran from the global financial system, signaling a gradual escalation that could lead to military confrontation, an outcome neither side rules out. However, the paper emphasized that a safer alternative lies in resuming negotiations to resolve the conflict, supported by ongoing diplomatic contacts to contain the crisis.
Al-Watan concluded that hope rests on all parties responding positively to allow for the resumption of dialogue and the prioritization of diplomacy, building on existing agreements to reach common ground and reopen the path toward peace.
