Qatargas Completes Landmark Environmental Project to Protect Qatar’s Marine Biodiversity

Qatargas announced the completion of a project to transport and preserve coral reefs and enrich the marine environment to preserve the marine biodiversity in the State of Qatar, in cooperation with the Ministry of Municipality and Environment and Qatar University.

This project is in line with the environmental development pillar of Qatar National Vision 2030, and includes the manufacture and landing of artificial coral reefs, and the transfer and installation of live coral reefs on them in areas designated by the Ministry of Municipality and Environment.

The project is the first incubator of its kind for living coral reefs in the region, where laboratories are equipped with the best technology in the Aquatic Fisheries Research Centre (AFRC) of the Ministry of Municipality and Environment to meet the project’s requirements. In addition, a comprehensive long-term monitoring and control plan for transferred coral reefs has been developed, and all new coral reef areas will be handed over to the Ministry of Municipality and Environment for inclusion under the list of nature reserves for the State of Qatar.
