Colombo: The Qatar national tennis team secured a significant achievement by earning promotion to Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group IV following a closely contested 2-1 victory over Kyrgyzstan in the Group IV promotion semifinal held in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

According to Qatar News Agency, the crucial win was initiated by Mubarak Shanan, who overcame a one-set deficit to defeat Kirill Kistanov with scores of 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 in the opening singles match. However, Mousa Shanan faced a setback, falling to Mirgiiaz Mirdzhaliev 6-3, 6-2 in the subsequent singles match. The decisive moment came when the Qatari duo of Mubarak and Mousa Shanan triumphed in the doubles rubber, overcoming the pairing of Kistanov and Mirdzhaliev 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Khalid Al Khulaifi, a Board Member of the Qatar Tennis, Squash, Padel and Badminton Federation, expressed his satisfaction with the team's achievement, highlighting the high-level performances and the representation of Qatar throughout the tournament. He emphasized that the milestone was a result of the players' continuous efforts, alongside the support from coaching and administrative teams, which serves to motivate further investment in the development of national teams.

Qatar reached the Group IV promotion semifinals by finishing as runner-up in its pool, with a record of one win and one loss. The team initially faced a 2-1 defeat against Sri Lanka but rebounded with a 2-1 victory over the Northern Mariana Islands. Their preparation included a two-week training camp in Thailand, which played a crucial role in their successful campaign. The squad featured the Shanan brothers, Mousa and Mubarak, along with Jabor Al Mutawa.
