Qatar Participates in IMO Assembly Focusing on Maritime Safety and Environmental Protection

London: The State of Qatar, represented by the Ministry of Transport, took part in the 34th Session of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Assembly in London. The session, attended by HE Minister of Transport Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulla bin Mohammed Al-Thani, addressed various issues concerning maritime navigation safety, security, and marine environment protection, alongside elections for the Organization's Executive Council.

According to Qatar News Agency, HE the Minister of Transport emphasized the pivotal role of the IMO in shaping global maritime transportation, enhancing safety, and protecting the marine environment. He reiterated Qatar's commitment to aligning its maritime industry priorities with the IMO's objectives. The Minister highlighted Qatar's initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve port efficiency, and develop national legislation according to international safety and environmental standards.

HE the Minister also spoke about Qatar's efforts to train and upskill national cadets in the maritime sector, mentioning the recent establishment of a Maritime Training and Simulation Center at the University of Doha for Science and Technology. This center is designed to prepare Qatari professionals using advanced technologies and global standards.

Furthermore, His Excellency highlighted Qatar's dedication to marine environmental protection, viewing seas as both trade routes and legacies to be preserved for future generations. He mentioned Qatar's national action plan for marine resource preservation and the creation of a multidisciplinary committee to enhance marine resource management, aligning with the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030).

HE Sheikh Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Saud Al-Thani, Qatar's Ambassador to the United Kingdom and Ireland, and Permanent Representative to the IMO, was also present at the session.
