Doha:The Qatar National Library (QNL) has inaugurated the Libraries Lead Forum 2026, focused on transforming libraries into social infrastructure. The event emphasizes the evolving role of libraries in meeting the changing needs and expectations of users driven by digital advancements.
According to Qatar News Agency, Professor Emad Issa Saleh, President of the Arab Federation for Libraries and Information, highlighted the need for innovative initiatives to attract library users and develop services that align with their aspirations. He noted the challenge of reaching non-visiting population segments and the importance of understanding their needs. QNL's initiatives in spreading culture and facilitating knowledge access were also praised.
Representatives from seven regional libraries, including the House of Wisdom in Sharjah and the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, shared insights on their community impacts. The forum's first day featured breakout sessions on topics such as cultural memory and digital knowledge systems, along with presentations on research repositories and childhood investment through libraries.
On October 15, discussions will focus on reimagining libraries as social infrastructure, utilizing AI to build a fair future, and transforming libraries in the Middle East and North Africa. The event will conclude with remarks by Katia Medawar, Director of Public Engagement at QNL.
The forum, which began with a workshop led by Dr. Khulud Ali Sahhari on community-led transformation, aims to empower communities by providing equitable technology access, fostering digital literacy, and supporting lifelong learning. It seeks to enhance digital skills and competencies while promoting social inclusion and active citizenship through collaborative spaces and dialogues.
