Qatar Joins Global Observance of International Day of Older Persons

Doha:The State of Qatar is participating in the global observance of the International Day of Older Persons on October 1st. This year's theme, 'The Age of Longevity: Rethinking Systems for Longer Lives,' underscores the need to adapt societal systems in response to increasing life expectancies worldwide.

According to Qatar News Agency, the day, established by the UN General Assembly in 1990, highlights the demographic shift towards longer life spans, presenting both opportunities and challenges for societies and economies. The 2026 observance encourages nations to view aging as an opportunity to create more equitable and sustainable systems. It stresses the importance of investing in the health, dignity, and participation of older persons as a developmental imperative.

This yeartheme calls for aligning various public systems, such as health, labor, and social protection, with the realities of longer lives. While longevity can bring positive outcomes, it also risks exacerbating inequalities if accumulated disadvantages over lifetimes aren't addressed. The day highlights the need to recognize older persons as active societal contributors and advocates for their involvement in policymaking processes.

The UN has planned a significant event at its New York headquarters on October 8, 2026, to explore innovative policies for ensuring longer, healthier lives with financial security and dignity. Discussions will focus on evidence-based strategies for healthy longevity, age-inclusive labor markets, and integrated care approaches.

In a message for the occasion, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres noted the achievement of increased life expectancy as a testament to improved health and social protection. He emphasized the dual nature of this shift as both a risk and an opportunity, urging action to ensure older persons live with dignity, choice, and respect.

Qatar places high importance on the dignity and rights of the elderly, adopting the term "Kibar Al-Qadr" to honor their societal contributions. It has developed a comprehensive framework to support senior citizens, grounded in its Permanent Constitution and Qatar National Vision 2030.

The Ministry of Social Development and Family in Qatar provides social protection programs, financial assistance, and family support to ensure the well-being of senior citizens. It also conducts community care services and initiatives to enhance social integration and reduce isolation among older persons.

The Center for Empowerment and Care of the Elderly (EHSAN) and the Primary Health Care Corporation offer extensive healthcare and social support services, contributing to the enhanced quality of life for senior citizens in Qatar.

Globally, the population of those aged 60 and above has risen dramatically and is projected to continue increasing, presenting a significant demographic transformation. This growth is occurring across all regions, with notable increases in sub-Saharan Africa, North Africa, and Western Asia.
