New York:The State of Qatar participated in a ministerial-level event focusing on reinforcing cooperation for a secure and stable maritime domain, held on the sidelines of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly.

According to Qatar News Agency, HE Dr. Mohammed bin Abdulaziz bin Saleh Al Khulaifi, Minister of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, represented Qatar at the event. He emphasized the importance of adhering to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, especially amidst the challenges facing maritime security in strategic waterways like the Strait of Hormuz and Bab El-Mandeb.

Dr. Al Khulaifi highlighted Qatar's commitment to the convention's principles, such as freedom of navigation, and stressed the link between secure supply chains and the international community‚s capability to deliver essential goods and aid during crises. He noted the global implications of disruptions in critical waterways, which disproportionately affect developing nations and vulnerable populations.

He further stated that maritime security is a collective responsibility, crucial for regional peace, global economic resilience, energy market stability, and the smooth operation of supply chains. Dr. Al Khulaifi called for a strong role by the Security Council in safeguarding navigation freedom, upholding international law, and addressing unlawful threats to commercial traffic.

Dr. Al Khulaifi reiterated Qatar's priority to de-escalate tensions and enable diplomatic efforts, asserting Qatar's ongoing commitment to mediating and facilitating the reopening of key waterways. He underscored that peaceful dispute resolution, adherence to international law, and dialogue are essential for crisis management and prevention.
