Doha: HE Director of the International Organizations Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Sheikha Hanouf bint Abdulrahman Al-Thani, has affirmed Qatar's ongoing commitment to strengthening its strategic partnership with the United Nations. This was announced during the State of Qatar's participation in the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), which aligns with Qatar's policy of supporting international multilateral action and contributing to global political, humanitarian, and development challenges.
According to Qatar News Agency, Her Excellency highlighted that Qatar sees the UNGA as a critical platform for fostering dialogue and consultation among nations. Qatar's participation is not limited to presenting national positions but extends to building mutual understanding, strategic partnerships, and initiatives that bolster global responses to various issues.
The partnership between Qatar and the UN has evolved into a multi-faceted and institutional relationship involving the Secretariat, UN agencies, funds, programs, and various offices. This relationship has seen significant institutional growth characterized by enhanced strategic dialogue, cooperation frameworks, joint agreements, expanded financial contributions, and the hosting of international conferences.
The United Nations House in Doha, inaugurated in 2023 and hosting 14 UN offices, is a testament to Qatar's commitment to multilateralism. It enhances coordination, cooperation, and expertise exchange, supporting the UN's regional work. Qatar is working to expand the scope of UN offices it hosts, further strengthening the organization's presence and effectiveness.
In 2025, Doha hosted the Second World Summit for Social Development, which concluded with the Doha Political Declaration, reaffirming global commitments to poverty eradication and inclusive development. The Declaration was adopted by the UNGA, marking a milestone in Qatar's partnership with the UN.
Additionally, Qatar hosted the 11th session of the Conference of the States Parties to the United Nations Convention against Corruption in December 2025, reflecting its support for international cooperation and combating corruption and transnational crime.
Her Excellency emphasized that Qatar's collaboration with the UN is more than hosting offices or financial support. It involves translating shared priorities into sustainable cooperation through strategic dialogues, technical collaboration, and joint initiatives. Supporting Least Developed Countries (LDCs) is a core pillar of this partnership, notably through the Doha Programme of Action, with Qatar committing USD 60 million to its implementation.
The High-Level Comprehensive Midterm Review of the Doha Programme of Action, set for March 2027 in Doha, will assess progress and accelerate implementation during the second half of the decade.
Qatar's partnership with the UN aligns with its foreign policy priorities, focusing on international peace, mediation, humanitarian action, sustainable development, and promoting international dialogue. Qatar supports conflict resolution through dialogue and peaceful means, integrating political, humanitarian, and development efforts.
Her Excellency also emphasized Qatar's efforts in updating the UN Secretary-General and the Security Council on developments related to Iranian attacks on Qatari territory, showcasing its commitment to international peace frameworks.
The 81st UNGA session occurs amid global geopolitical shifts and institutional reforms under the UN80 initiative, with Secretary-General Antonio Guterres completing his term at the end of 2026. Qatar aims to actively engage with member states and UN entities throughout the session, contributing to discussions on the Organization's future priorities and deepening its strategic partnership with the UN to address global challenges.
