Geneva: The State of Qatar, through the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, actively participated in the 15th meeting of the Open-ended Working Group of the Basel Convention. This event, held in Geneva, Switzerland, brought together representatives from States Parties, international organizations, and experts to discuss the control of transboundary movements of hazardous wastes and their disposal.
According to Qatar News Agency, the meeting addressed several key technical and strategic issues. Discussions centered on the management of plastic and textile waste, proposed amendments to the convention's annexes, and enhancing cooperation with relevant international organizations. The agenda also focused on reviewing the implementation of decisions made by the Conference of the Parties and preparing for future meetings and responsibilities.
Before the main meeting, Qatar's Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, represented by the Hazardous Chemicals and Waste Department, took part in the Implementation and Compliance Committee of the Basel Convention. Qatar, as a member of this committee, contributed to discussions aimed at bolstering the implementation of the convention's provisions and ensuring that States Parties comply with their obligations. The delegation also explored mechanisms to advance international cooperation and build capacity for the environmentally sound management of hazardous waste.
The Ministry reiterated that Qatar's participation in the Basel Convention underscores its commitment to supporting international environmental protection efforts and promoting sustainable chemical and hazardous waste management practices. This participation aligns with global environmental standards and aims to contribute to sustainable development goals, ensuring resource preservation for future generations.
