Doha: The Qatar Diamond Exchange (QDE) has been admitted to membership of CIBJO, the World Jewellery Confederation, marking a significant milestone for the exchange. This membership extends QDE's influence beyond the diamond trade into the broader jewellery, gemstone, and precious metals sectors.
According to Qatar News Agency, QDE's membership was approved during CIBJO's centenary year. Founded in 1926, CIBJO is headquartered in Milan and Bern and serves as the principal representative and standards-setting body for the international jewellery industry. The confederation unites national jewellery associations, trade organizations, and companies from across the industry, from mining to retail. Notably, CIBJO is the only jewellery and gemstone organization with Special Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
As a National Association Member, QDE will participate in the confederation's sectoral commissions, contributing to the development of standards, terminology, and disclosure practices governing the global jewellery and gemstone trade. Ghanim Nasser Al Saadi, Director of the Qatar Diamond Exchange, emphasized the significance of joining CIBJO, particularly in its 100th anniversary year. He highlighted that this membership connects Qatar to a century of work in developing standards supporting the global jewellery and gemstone industry. It also broadens QDE's remit beyond diamonds to include coloured stones, pearls, and precious metals.
The QDE's membership with CIBJO adds to its international affiliations, following its admission to the World Federation of Diamond Bourses (WFDB) and the World Diamond Council (WDC). These affiliations position Qatar within the principal institutions governing the global trade in diamonds, gemstones, and jewellery, aligning QDE's operations with the WDC System of Warranties, the WFDB Code of Conduct, and CIBJO's Blue Book standards.
Dr Gaetano Cavalieri, President of CIBJO, expressed his pleasure in welcoming QDE, highlighting Qatar's commitment to international standards and responsible trade. He looks forward to QDE's contributions to CIBJO's commissions and the wider industry work.
Launched in July 2026 and based at Ras Bufontas Free Zone, QDE offers a regulated platform for diamond trading and related industry services. The exchange connects Doha with international markets, supporting the growth of Qatar's diamond and precious stones sector, aligning with Qatar National Vision 2030's economic diversification goals.
