Qatar Commits to Advancing Human Rights and Inclusion

New York:The State of Qatar has reaffirmed its dedication to fostering a human rights culture, emphasizing an approach rooted in the rule of law, transparency, justice, and human dignity.

According to Qatar News Agency, this commitment was articulated by Amina Abdullah Salat, Third Secretary at Qatar's Permanent Mission to the United Nations, during the UN General Assembly's Third Committee session in New York. Salat emphasized that respect for human rights is a core element of Qatar's policy, supported by a constitutional and legislative framework ensuring fundamental rights and freedoms for all.

Qatar ratified the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights as of May 21, 2018, reinforcing its dedication to international obligations and the protection of human rights. The Qatar National Vision 2030 highlights key human rights areas such as health, education, environment, women's empowerment, and children's rights.

Ongoing consultations for the National Human Rights Action Plan 2026-2030, led by HE Minister of State for International Cooperation Maryam bint Ali bin Nasser Al Misnad, aim to incorporate human rights principles into actionable policies. Additionally, Law No. 22 of 2025 on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, enacted by HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, underscores Qatar’s commitment to international human rights standards.

Qatar's membership in the Human Rights Council for the 2025-2027 term reflects the international community's trust in its human rights advocacy efforts. Salat cited various international initiatives, including a resolution co-sponsored with Costa Rica to protect the rights of women and children in conflict situations, and Qatar's hosting of the United Nations Human Rights Training and Documentation Centre for South-West Asia and the Arab Region.

Financially, Qatar has supported the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights with USD 3 million in earmarked funding from 2019-2021, and USD 1.75 million pledged for 2024-2026. Salat also highlighted Qatar's support for a Human Rights Council resolution condemning attacks by the Islamic Republic of Iran against several countries, including Qatar, stressing the importance of international law and humanitarian principles.

In conclusion, Salat reiterated Qatar's commitment to containing escalation and fostering diplomatic solutions, working collaboratively to bridge differences and achieve peaceful resolutions.
