Doha: The State of Qatar and the Republic of India share a cultural relationship that is deeply rooted in history, extending over centuries. These connections have been fortified through trade and cultural interactions, as India has historically been a major trading partner for Qatar and other GCC countries. Qatari merchants frequently traveled to the Indian coast to sell pearls and import various products, fostering mutual cultural influences that persist to this day. According to Qatar News Agency, since the 1970s, Qatar and India have established strong diplomatic relations and notable bilateral cooperation, leading to a strategic partnership encompassing politics, economy, and culture. Cultural exchanges have consistently been a vital part of this relationship. The Indian community in Qatar has played a significant role in strengthening these cultural ties through numerous events, such as the "Qatar: Our Second Home" festival in 2017, which showcased cultural and artistic performances in different Indian languages. The cultural ties were further solidified with Qatar Museums' designation of 2019 as the Year of Culture Qatar-India. This initiative included various joint events, cultural exchanges, and collaborations in literature, arts, and heritage. Notable artistic events during this year included the "Contemporary Qatar" exhibition and several Indian exhibitions in Doha, such as the "Gems and Jewels from Royal Indian Courts" exhibition at the Museum of Islamic Art and the photographic exhibition "Where Cultures Meet" at the Cultural Village (Katara). In 2019, the Qatari Forum for Authors, in collaboration with the Indian community in Doha, held a symposium titled "Cultural Exchange between Qatar and India: Diversified Literary Proximity Despite Long Distance." Esteemed Indian authors such as Abdul Kabeer Vellapurattu and Sheikh Muhammad participated in the event. Additionally, in August 2022, the Qatari Authors Forum hosted writer Suhail Abdul Hakeem to discuss his translated book "Echoes of Silence Antho logy," featuring poems by Indian poet Veerankutty. During the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, the Indian Embassy and the Indian Cultural Centre organized traditional dance performances as part of the event's cultural activities. Cultural institutions in Qatar, such as Katara, actively participate in enhancing cultural cooperation. Katara recently hosted the Qatar International Arts Festival (QIAF) with significant participation from Indian artists and regularly features artistic and musical performances reflecting Indian popular folklore. Cooperation between Qatar and India extends to various institutions, including collaboration between Katara and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) for the Katara Space Science Program. The Indian Cultural Centre in Qatar, under the auspices of the Indian Embassy, serves as a hub for cultural activities, organizing events celebrating Indian heritage and offering Hindi language classes. Qatar hosts the largest Indian community in the country, with around 45,000 studen ts enrolled across 19 Indian schools. Many Indian students pursue higher education in Qatar, contributing to the intellectual exchange between the two nations. Known for its rich diversity in philosophy, literature, and arts, Indian culture is renowned globally, particularly its cinema industry, which produces hundreds of films annually. India is also home to approximately 40 UNESCO World Heritage sites, with 32 related to cultural tourism.
