The State of Qatar affirmed that the right to development is a basic human right, noting that attention to this right has become, with the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, an international and national priority that must take into account the importance of implementing these development goals in line with the texts of the declaration and the commitments of states contained in international human rights covenants.
This came in the statement of the State of Qatar delivered by Second Secretary at Qatar’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations Office in Geneva Mohamed Al Buainain, before the 51st session of the Human Rights Council, during the panel discussion on the right to development, under the title “35 years on: policy pathways to operationalizing the right to development”.
Al-Buainain pointed out that the State of Qatar has adopted a promising national vision for comprehensive development, which is Qatar National Vision 2030, and its work on implementing it through national development strategies, whereby it achieved many important national goals, and took firm steps to implement the sustainable development goals. It also maintained its leading position in many international and regional indicators, on top of which is the indicator of economic growth and development, environmental sustainability, and quality of education and other vital indicators.
He noted that the State of Qatar has adopted a foreign policy based on strengthening and promoting international cooperation and solidarity in order to contribute to efforts to achieve development in various fields.
He pointed out that one of the most prominent examples in this regard is its efforts in interactive solidarity, which is represented in providing support to countries affected by disasters, conflicts and climate change, as well as its efforts in investing in providing quality education and implementing a number of programs and initiatives with many international partners.
He also mentioned that, from 2012 to 2019, the State of Qatar provided USD 6.75 billion in aid to more than 100 countries around the world, in addition to humanitarian and medical aid to more than 80 countries, and contributed with USD 20 million to Gavi, “The Vaccine Alliance”, and awarded USD 10 million to the World Health Organization in support of its efforts to develop testing equipment, treatments, and vaccines.
Al-Buainain reiterated the State of Qatar’s firm stance on implementing the right to development at the national level by continuing to adopt and implement effective policies, and to strengthen international cooperation that helps developing countries achieve development goals.
