Libyan authorities on Monday arrested 16 officials who oversee dams’ utility in the country.

The committee investigating the Derna floods ordered the officials to be jailed pending the investigation, according to a statement issued by the general prosecutor’s office.

Having carried out the investigation, the committee brought charges against those officials of abusing the administrative and financial tasks because of their blunders that led to a disaster that claimed lives.

The officials, in question, shirked their duty in taking precautions against disasters and were the primary cause of economic losses to the country, the statement reads.
