Jordanians in Qatar send home $21 million in Eid remittances

Jordanians working in Qatar sent home over $21 million in remittances during the 2023 Eid al-Fitr holiday, an increase of 14.2 percent from the $18 million recorded in the same period of 2022, according to Qatar-based exchange firms. In interviews with the Jordan News Agency (Petra) on Thursday, they affirmed that a significant number of Jordanians working in Qatar visited banks and exchange offices in Doha, days preceding the Eid, to send money to their families back home. “Despite the fact that salaries were not paid in Qatar prior to Eid, as many had anticipated, many members of the Jordanian community were eager to transfer money to Jordan in order to assist their families in meeting the costs associated with the holiday,” they added. Regular cash transfers from Qatar to Jordan, as well as other transfers of Jordanian labor worldwide, are one of the driving forces behind supporting the Jordanian economy and the development process. In Qatar, Jordanians work in a variety of occupations and industries, but they are particularly represented in the finance and banking sector, real estate and construction firms, the hospitality and tourism industry, and service and IT firms. However, the majority of community members are employed in government-run educational and medical facilities as well as private medical practices.
