AMMAN, Jordanian Foreign Minister, Ayman Safadi, yesterday, discussed with his Arab counterparts, the latest tensions in Jerusalem, after the Israeli national security minister’s controversial visit to the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound.

Safadi, who is also chairman of the Arab ministerial committee, in charge of international action, to address illegal Israeli policies and measures in occupied Jerusalem, made phone calls with foreign ministers of the committee’s member countries, namely the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Algeria, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Egypt and Morocco, as well as, the secretary general of the Arab League, Jordan’s Foreign Ministry said, in a statement.

Members of the committee said that, Israeli National Security Minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir’s breaking into the holy site of Al-Aqsa Mosque compound was a provocative step, and constituted an unacceptable breach of international law, as well as, the historical and legal status quo in Jerusalem and its holy sites, the statement said.

The committee called on the international community to stop Israel’s aggressions against the Palestinian people and its violations of international law and international humanitarian law.

Members of the committee also affirmed its support for the Jordanian custodianship of Jerusalem’s Islamic and Christian holy sites, and its role in protecting its Arab, Islamic and Christian identity.

Under heavy security protection, Ben-Gvir on Tuesday visited the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, which was regarded as the most sacred place by Jews and the third holiest site in Islam by the Muslims.
