Jordan and Iraq signed the second amendment to their electricity sale contract on Thursday, ensuring the continued supply of electricity to Iraq's Rutba area via the Jordanian grid. The agreement was signed by Sufyan Batayneh, Director General of Jordan's National Electric Power Company (NEPCO), and Riyad Oreibi, representing Iraq's General Company for Electricity Transmission/Central Region. The amendment extends the contract to supply electricity at 132 kV from Jordan's Risha area in Mafraq until work on the 400 kV connection is completed. The previous contract, amended in February, was set to expire on September 27, 2024. Batayneh emphasized the significance of the Jordan-Iraq electrical connection in fostering stronger cooperation between the two countries. He noted that this project enhances the stability of both nations' electrical systems and aligns with broader efforts to establish a common Arab energy market. The project is also part of Jordan's goal to become a regional hub for energy exchange. Work on the 400 kV electrical connection between the Risha transfer station in Jordan and the Qaim transfer station in Iraq is ongoing, with operations expected to begin by mid-2025.
