Italian PM Calls for Efforts to Tackle Illegal Immigration

Rome, March 02 (QNA) – Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called for exerting all efforts to combat illegal immigration.

In a message to the President of the Commission, President of the European Council and the Swedish Presidency of the European Union, Meloni said that it is their moral duty – rather than political, to do everything they can to prevent such tragedies from happening again, referring to the migrant boat crash, which took place on Sunday off the coast of Calabria.

She added that the incident that occurred in recent days a few meters from the coast of the city of Crotone, in which dozens were killed, including many children, has shocked everyone.

Unfortunately, this is not an isolated case, Meloni added, noting that, Italy has been lamenting such tragedies for many years, when those who try to reach the shores of Italy on primitive boats lose their lives at sea.

She stressed that it is a very difficult challenge, because migration is a historical and complex phenomenon, especially when boats loaded with migrants go to sea, explaining that this is precisely why they cannot turn to easy superficial solutions that may seem useful on the media level, yet totally to solve the problem.

She clarified that the issue is not about finding tools to eliminate migration to Europe, but about eliminating trafficking in human beings and ensuring that the phenomenon of migration is managed in accordance with the rules and safety, which are primarily in the interest of migrants themselves, and in numbers that allow for the effective integration of those who come to Europe with a legitimate aspiration for a better life.
