Iraq in a year .. Al-Sudani elected PM.. Arab journalists renew their confidence in Al-Lami as president of their Federation

Baghdad, Report— Iraq witnessed during the year 2022 multiple events that had a great impact on all levels.

On February 3, the leader of ISIS, Abu Ibrahim al-Hashemi, was killed after an American raid carried out by the Joint Special Operations Command in northwestern Syria.

Last October, Muhammad al-Sudani was elected prime minister, becoming the seventh prime minister of Iraq since the fall of the former regime in 2003.

On the 27th of the same month, Parliament approved by a majority the new government headed by Muhammad al-Sudani, ending a political stalemate that exceeded a year. Parliament approved al-Sudani’s choices for members of his government, which includes 21 ministers, while the vote on two ministries was postponed until later.

In the same month, the Federation of Arab Journalists, during its fourteenth electoral conference in Cairo, re-elected the head of the Iraqi Journalists Syndicate, Moayad Al-Lami, as its president for a new term.

Al-Lami said in his speech that convening the conference carries a responsibility that rests with the Federation and its leadership, especially the implementation of fundamental reforms and updates in the context of developing the Arab press.

He pointed out that the next General Secretariat is scheduled to implement the implementation mechanisms.

Al-Lami added: If press freedom and expression are not available, our countries will continue to suffer.

In terms of events in the region and the world, Qatar’s hosting of the World Cup is the most prominent event (November 20 – December 18), which Argentina won after winning a penalty shootout over the former World Cup champion France.

On May 13, the President of the UAE, Khalifa bin Zayed, died, and in the same month, the Palestinian journalist Sherine Abu Aqleh, who was working for Al-Jazeera channel, was killed by the Israeli occupation forces while she was covering the storming of the Jenin camp.

On July 8, former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was shot dead at the age of 67, while delivering a speech at an election rally in Nara.

On the 15th of it, the Jeddah Summit for Security and Development was held in the city of Jeddah in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, in the presence of US President Joe Biden and the leaders of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, in addition to the leaders of Egypt, Iraq and Jordan.

On the 31st of the same month, it was announced that the leader of Al-Qaeda, Ayman Al-Zawahiri, was killed at the age of 71, in a US drone strike in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan.

On September 8, Queen Elizabeth II, who is Britain’s longest reigning monarch on the throne, died at Balmoral Castle at the age of 96, after seventy years on the throne.

On the 10th of it, Charles III was inaugurated as King of Britain, and Prince William, Crown Prince.

On October 17, Karim Benzema was crowned the Golden Ball award for the best player in the world for the year 2022, ahead of Bayern Munich and the Senegalese national team, Sadio Mane.

On the 20th, British Prime Minister Liz Terrace announced her resignation from the leadership of the Conservative Party, after only 45 days of assuming office. Four days later, Rishi Sunak was elected leader of the Conservative Party and head of the British government.

On the 7th of this month, Saudi Arabia hosted 3 Chinese-Arab summits in the capital, Riyadh, during the period from 7 to 10 of it, in the presence of 30 leaders of countries and international organizations, headed by the Saudi monarch, his crown prince and the Chinese president.
