Int’l cooperation min.: Egyptian proposals to development partners to finance NCCS 2050 projects

International Cooperation Minister Rania el Mashat said Egypt’s National Climate Change Strategy (NCCS) 2050 includes several development projects in various sectors, adding that part of these projects were presented by the government on Egypt’s development partners to obtain necessary fund to implement them.

In statements to MENA on Tuesday, the minister said that some of these projects related to climate adaptation and others to alleviate the impacts of climate change.

She went on to say “We have sent the list of projects to various development partners, including international partners from the private sector,” noting that these offers are currently under discussion.

She noted that the development projects, which are being implemented in Egypt, are distinguished by the fact that more than one development partner can participate in them, citing Cairo Metro Line 3 and the electric train line project are an example for this, as it was implemented with joint funding between China, the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the French Development Agency (AFD).

She underlined that the green economy has become one of the most important priorities of countries and international financial institutions, adding Egypt formulates its strategies with different countries for a sustainable or inclusive economy and a digital and green economy, these principles are a common denominator in its relationship with development partners.

Through the National Climate Change Strategy (NCCS) 2050, which was launched in May 2022, the Egyptian projects will be in conformity with the green economy and Sustainable Development Strategy (SDS): Egypt Vision 2030.

Mashat said Egypt, in light of its presidency of the 27th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP27), set for the Red sea resort of Sharm El Sheikh in November, sends three messages on the importance of climate adaptation projects for the African continent, particularly agriculture projects, in light of what is taking place in the world, starting from the ongoing war in Europe, the economic resilience or recovery, and the transition from pledges at the Glasgow Conference (COP26) to the stage of implementation in COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh.

She noted that the international financial institutions at the Glasgow conference earmarked dlrs 100 billion for combating climate change.

Egypt’s National Climate Change Strategy (NCCS) includes climate adaptation and mitigation programs in all sectors until 2050, the most important of which are: energy, transportation, agriculture and water resources.
