High-Efficiency Wireless Charging System for NEVs Developed by Chinese and British Researchers

Dongguan:Researchers from Chinese and British institutions have collaborated to develop a wireless charging system for new energy vehicles (NEVs) boasting a conversion efficiency exceeding 98 percent.

According to Qatar News Agency, this innovative system is poised to facilitate the widespread adoption of autonomous vehicles and has potential applications in rail transit, industrial robots, and low-altitude aircraft. The fully automated charging solution, which requires no manual intervention, is considered crucial for the commercial deployment of autonomous vehicles, with inductive power transfer identified as an optimal approach.

Mainstream ferrite-core solutions currently encounter challenges related to efficiency, power density, and thermal stability. Overcoming these hurdles while maintaining high efficiency has been a significant obstacle in advancing wireless charging technology.

Researchers from the Dongguan Institute of Materials Science and Technology, part of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in south China's Guangdong Province, partnered with the City University of Hong Kong and the University of Cambridge to develop this new system. The technology's potential applications extend beyond autonomous vehicles to include rail transit, industrial automated guided vehicles, and low-altitude aircraft.

In September, China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, along with eight other government departments, unveiled a five-year plan for the intelligent connected NEV industry, set to span from 2026 to 2030.
