Hamed Al Mulla’s LOCAL LAW wins Brooq Cup

Mohamed Saad

The Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club (QREC) organised the ninth race meeting in the 2022-23 season at the Al Rayyan Racecourse dirt track on Wednesday, 9 November. In the feature and seventh race, The Hamed Ali Al Mulla-owned Local Law (GB) (Dubawi x Lady Marian) put in an excellent performance to land the Brooq Cup, having prevailed by almost two lengths in the 1900m Handicap (80-100) for 3YO+ Thoroughbreds under Hugo Besnier for trainer Hamad Al Jehani.

The feature race had a field of 14 runners. Local Law started from gate 3 and was kept in mid-position by Besnier. Shakour (IRE) (Declaration Of War), who broke from gate 1 was the early leader with a strong pace and he kept increasing the gap between him and the pack behind. However, the gap narrowed at the final bend with the others announcing challenge, but Shakour managed to maintain the lead, and just 200m before the line, it seemed as if he was going to make it a post-to-post win. Only then, Local Law (GB) came with an impressive sweep from behind to pass him in a matter of strides, showing an amazing turn of foot, and win the race. Shakour, in the colours of Fahad Bin Mubarak Bin Jassim Al Groon, had to settle for second for trainer Hadi Al Ramzani and jockey Prakash Akhade. The Sharq Stud-owned and Owaida Salem Al Hajri-trained was far (further 7½ lengths) behind in third under Alberto Sanna.

Following the feature race, Abdulla Rashid Al Kubaisi, QREC Racing Manager, presented the trophies to the winners.
