Doha: Georgetown University in Qatar (GU-Q) recently hosted a Model United Nations (MUN) event that brought together 180 university students and their advisors from across the Arab region. The event was designed to foster diplomacy and collaboration among students under the theme "Building Global Unity and Peace in Areas of Conflict: Empowering Peace Through Agency." According to Qatar News Agency, the MUN event served as a platform for young leaders from ten local and ten regional universities, including institutions from Bahrain, Lebanon, Kuwait, UAE, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Morocco. Participants engaged in discussions and shared solutions aimed at nurturing a new generation of leaders committed to global peace. In addition to the student activities, GU-Q organized workshops for university faculty and administrators who accompanied the student delegations. These sessions focused on best practices and advancements in areas like accessibility, experiential learning, and artificial intelligence. "As we celebrate 20 years of Georgetown's presence in Qatar, we are doubling down on our commitment to advancing interregional dialogue and equipping future leaders with the skills and perspectives necessary to build a more peaceful and united world," said Dr. Ken Grcich, Associate Dean of Students, who facilitated a session on enhancing student experience. Dr. Hussain Al Shroufi, Associate Professor of Applied Linguistics from Gulf University for Science and Technology in Kuwait, emphasized the value of such interactions, noting that the event paved the way for closer ties between regional universities. GU-Q's MUN program aligns with the university's mission to inspire informed and ethical engagement on global issues, and plans are underway to welcome even more participants at its signature event in February 2025.
