Google Cloud Joins Qatar Internet Exchange to Boost National Infrastructure

Doha:The Communications Regulatory Authority (CRA) has announced that Google Cloud has joined the Qatar Internet Exchange (QIX) as a new member, marking a crucial step in enhancing Qatar's national internet infrastructure.

According to Qatar News Agency, QIX is a government-supported, non-profit initiative that plays a central role in the internet ecosystem of Qatar. It acts as a central hub connecting internet service providers, content providers, educational institutions, and various government and enterprise entities, facilitating the efficient local exchange of internet traffic.

Google Cloud, known for its global leadership in cloud technology, offers infrastructure, platform capabilities, and AI-driven solutions that aid organizations in digital transformation. The collaboration with QIX is expected to improve local access to Google Cloud services, reduce latency, and enhance network performance, which will benefit service providers, enterprises, and end users in Qatar by delivering faster and more reliable digital services.

Ali Al Suwaidi, Director of Technical Affairs at CRA and Chair of the QIX Steering Committee, emphasized the importance of this development, stating that integrating Google Cloud into QIX strengthens its role as critical national internet infrastructure. He highlighted that this milestone supports Qatar's digital transformation objectives by enhancing traffic localization and improving network performance.

Ghassan Kosta, Regional General Manager for Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, and Iraq at Google Cloud, stated that joining QIX is a significant step in enhancing the digital experience for customers and partners in Qatar. He noted that localizing traffic exchange ensures faster and more reliable access to Google Cloud's services, contributing to the Qatar National Vision 2030 by supporting a resilient national digital infrastructure.

The inclusion of Google Cloud strengthens QIX's position as a trusted platform for global cloud and content providers in Qatar. This development is expected to encourage greater participation from government entities, enterprises, academic institutions, and research networks, thereby supporting a more interconnected and resilient digital ecosystem. It aligns with Qatar National Vision 2030 by reinforcing national digital infrastructure, promoting innovation, and advancing a knowledge-based economy.
