Famine Risk Escalates in Conflict-Ridden Sudan

Nyala:Sudan Famine risks are increasingly threatening areas affected by conflict in Sudan, as the nation grapples with severe funding shortages, insecurity, and restricted humanitarian aid access.

According to Qatar News Agency, the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) has reported a significant deterioration in acute food insecurity and malnutrition, especially in regions such as Darfur and Kordofan. These areas are suffering from severe drought conditions exacerbated by El Nino and ongoing violence, which have severely depleted food supplies.

Screening programs have revealed alarming rates of malnutrition among displaced populations, with cases of severe acute malnutrition in children doubling in Nyala and quadrupling in Kass. In North Darfur, delayed rainfall has severely affected agriculture, leading displaced farmers to depend heavily on food markets.

Since October of last year, more than 300,000 people have been displaced throughout Greater Kordofan. The ongoing conflict in North Kordofan has forced farming communities to relocate towards El Obeid, while insecurity and restricted access continue to prevent the resumption of regular livelihoods.

The IPC has emphasized the critical need for safe and unhindered humanitarian access to conflict zones in Kordofan, alongside additional funding, to avert further loss of life.
