Doha: Executive Chair of WISH Lord Darzi of Denham highlighted the strength of the State of Qatar's health system and its many successes, expecting that innovations and improvements, progress and success will continue at the global level in the field of health. According to Qatar News Agency, in his speech at the opening of the World Innovation Summit for Health (WISH 2024), Lord Darzi said that health systems in the developed world can learn a lot from Qatar, especially after it expanded its network of health facilities, implemented a system of healthy cities across the country, and worked to improve and maintain patient records. He noted that the State of Qatar's response to the COVID-19 pandemic led to the lowest mortality rates in the world, making it a good model for how to deal with future pandemics, particularly in terms of decision-making. He also addressed the challenges faced by those providing care during armed conflict, emphasizing that war is a healthcare catastrophe. Lord Darzi condemned the t argeting of healthcare personnel or infrastructure, stating it is purely wrong and urging global solidarity to honor those who continue providing care under dire conditions. This year's healthcare focus, as outlined by the Executive Chair of WISH, will be on strengthening relationships between healthcare professionals and patients, improving women's health with a focus on cancer prevention, combating tuberculosis among refugees and migrants, and enhancing healthcare for the elderly. A report prepared by the conference was highlighted, focusing on antimicrobial resistance to ensure the effectiveness of antibiotics for future generations and developing innovative solutions to combat this issue worldwide. Dr. Christos Christou, President of Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF), echoed concerns about the rising attacks on healthcare facilities and workers, stating that these have become the "new norm." He stressed the need for hospitals to be respected as safe places and shared alarming examples of medical staff worki ng under dire conditions, such as in Gaza. Dr. Christou reiterated MSF's commitment to neutrality and its mission to provide a voice for the voiceless, emphasizing that neutrality does not equate to silence. The summit has convened over 200 health experts to discuss evidence-based ideas and practices in healthcare innovation, aiming to tackle the world's most pressing global health challenges.
