EU High Representative Calls for Immediate Truce in Gaza to Enable Humanitarian Aid

BRUSSELS — Josep Borrell, European Union (EU) High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, called for an immediate truce in Gaza to allow the entry of humanitarian aid.

According to a new release by Qatar News Agency, Borrell made the call in a post on “X,” stating that Gaza is experiencing a “complete blackout and isolation” amidst ongoing heavy shelling. He emphasized that the high civilian death toll, which includes children, violates International Humanitarian Law. Yesterday, the United Nations General Assembly endorsed a resolution that calls for an immediate, permanent, and sustainable humanitarian truce in Gaza.

The resolution, proposed by approximately 50 countries, passed with 120 votes in favor, 14 against, and 45 abstentions. Between Friday night and Saturday morning, Gaza underwent its heaviest bombardment since October 7, leading to the total destruction of hundreds of buildings. The region also faced limited ground incursion for the third consecutive day and saw a complete interruption of communications, including the internet, isolating it from the outside world.

Gaza has been under a blockade since 2007, but measures have intensified for the past 22 days, including the cutting off of electricity and water, and the prevention of the entry of basic materials and fuel. Since October 7, air raids on Gaza have led to the death of 7,650 citizens, including 3,195 children and 1,863 women, while approximately 20,000 have been injured.
