Doha: The Ministry of Endowments (Awqaf) and Islamic Affairs appealed to Muslims to observe fasting on the Day of Ashura, which falls on the 10th of Muharram 1448 AH, in accordance with the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace be upon him).
According to Qatar News Agency, Awqaf highlighted that fasting on this day is highly recommended under Islamic Sharia, noting that scholars have also outlined three levels of fasting on this day.
The highest and most virtuous level, the statement explained, is to fast the day before and the day after it. The second is to fast the 9th and 10th of Muharram, while the third level is to fast the 10th alone.
It added that it is also permissible to fast the 10th and 11th for those who missed fasting on the 9th, and that all of these options are permissible.
