Egyptian Foreign Minister Engages with US and UN Officials on Sudan Crisis

Cairo: Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty engaged in separate phone discussions with Massad Boulos, Senior Advisor to the US President for Arab and Middle Eastern Affairs, and Tom Fletcher, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, focusing on the escalating security and humanitarian crisis in Sudan’s Darfur region, especially in El Fasher, to promote calm and achieve stability.

According to Qatar News Agency, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry highlighted that Boulos updated Abdelatty on the latest developments and US efforts through the Quartet framework to halt ongoing violations in Sudan, particularly in conflict-affected areas of Darfur.

Abdelatty reiterated Egypt’s steadfast support for Sudan’s unity and territorial integrity, rejecting any division plans and committing to preserving Sudan’s national institutions, sovereignty, and resources. He stressed the importance of adhering to the Quartet’s September statement and swiftly establishing a humanitarian truce as a precursor to a comprehensive ceasefire and inclusive political process led by Sudanese themselves, to prevent division or undermining national institutions.

Additionally, Abdelatty’s discussion with Fletcher focused on enhancing international response efforts and ensuring humanitarian aid reaches the most affected groups in Sudan. Fletcher expressed his intention to inform the Security Council about the violations in Sudan.

Both parties agreed to maintain consultations and coordinate efforts to support regional and international initiatives aimed at achieving sustainable peace in Sudan and reducing the humanitarian suffering of its people.
