Doha: Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty and US President's Senior Advisor for Arab and African Affairs Massad Boulos discussed developments in Sudan, Libya, and the Horn of Africa during a phone call.
According to Qatar News Agency, a statement issued by Egypt's Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday highlighted that the two officials underscored the importance of continued coordination on developments in these regions. They emphasized support for political and diplomatic solutions to the crises, aiming to strengthen security and stability across Africa.
Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt's steadfast support for Sudan's unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, advocating for the preservation of its national institutions. He rejected the establishment of parallel entities and stressed the need to ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid while calling for an inclusive, Sudanese-led political process.
Regarding the Horn of Africa, Abdelatty emphasized the necessity to respect the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of countries in the region. He warned against unilateral actions that could threaten regional peace and security, including attempts to secure maritime access by force in violation of international law.
He also highlighted the importance of providing the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) with necessary funding and support. This would enable AUSSOM to carry out its mandate, preserve the security and stability gains achieved in Somalia in recent years, safeguard the interests of countries in the region, and prevent the resurgence of security threats.
On Libya, Abdelatty reiterated Egypt's firm support for Libya's unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, along with the preservation of its national institutions. He stressed the need to advance toward a comprehensive political settlement through a Libyan-led process that would pave the way for simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections as soon as possible, end the country's political division, and meet the Libyan people's aspirations for security and stability.
For his part, Boulos commended Egypt's efforts to de-escalate regional tensions and unify Libya's institutions.
