Edinburgh Airport runway covered with water after River Almond bursts its banks

Edinburgh Airport have said that the recent deluge of heavy rain has impacted their runway after the River Almond burst its banks.

The media team shared an image on their Twitter channel that showed Airport Operations shining a light from their 4×4 onto the water that was lying on the runway service on the evening of December 30.

They said that the extreme rainfall had led to Gogarbun experiencing their highest level at the airport and that the River Almond bursting its banks had led to water covering the runway.

Whilst ensuring the safety of all passengers, those at the airport were able to successfully keep the runway open and operational.

In a statement on their Twitter, they said: “Extremely heavy rainfall has resulted in in the Ggoarburn registering its highest ever level at the airport and the River Almond bursting its banks. That excess water has encroached onto the runway. Teams are working to remove water where they can but this is proving difficult with all parts of the waterway experiencing high saturation levels.
