DIFI Marks 20 Years of Shaping Family Policy at Home and Globally

Doha: Doha International Family Institute (DIFI), a member of Qatar Foundation (QF), recently convened a panel discussion titled "20 Years of Policy Change: DIFI's Story of Global Impact". This event highlighted the pivotal role DIFI has played over the past two decades in influencing family policies on national, regional, and global levels. The panel was moderated by Dr. Khaled Al Naama, Director of Advocacy and Outreach at DIFI, and attended by HE Undersecretary of the Ministry of Social Development and Family (MSDF), Khalifa bin Issa bin Abdullah Al Kubaisi, along with DIFI's Executive Director, Dr. Sharifa Al Emadi.

According to Qatar News Agency, the panelists emphasized DIFI's efforts since its establishment in 2006. DIFI has been instrumental in enhancing research on Arab families, promoting evidence-based policies, and incorporating Arab perspectives into discussions on family policy worldwide. Dr. Al Emadi noted that DIFI has transitioned from generating family-related knowledge to actively influencing policies and enacting legal changes. She confirmed that the research conducted in collaboration with MSDF is crucial in translating findings into actionable policies.

Dr. Al Emadi further highlighted the necessity for family policies to evolve with rapid social and technological advancements. She stressed that addressing issues like digital addiction requires a focus on prevention and enhancing parental awareness, equipping them with the necessary tools. HE Al Kubaisi reflected on the successful partnership between MSDF and DIFI, underscoring the role of research and evidence in shaping national policies and programs related to families.

He cited recent amendments in government employment policies as an example of research-based practical measures supporting families and working parents. These amendments to the Human Resources Law include enhanced flexibility in maternity leave and working hours. Al Kubaisi also urged society to consider digital transformation and artificial intelligence from a family and social perspective, as these factors significantly impact family cohesion and communication.

The session also explored Qatar's family policy objectives within the framework of the nation's development strategy. It included a discussion on the national 'Digitally Aware Family' campaign initiated by MSDF, aimed at promoting digital safety awareness and empowering families to safeguard their children.
