Biden: “I Don’t Want to Contain China”

US President Joe Biden stressed that the United States is not trying to isolate or contain China.

“I don’t want to contain China,” Biden said at a news conference Sunday, hours after he arrived in Vietnam’s capital, Hanoi.

Addressing the news conference, the US President expressed hope to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping as soon as possible, noting that he met Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang during the G20 summit held in New Delhi.

Biden said China “has a difficult economic problem right now,” adding “I don’t think it’s going to cause China to invade Taiwan.” “I want to see China succeed economically, but I want to see them succeed by the rules,” Biden said.

“We have an opportunity to strengthen alliances around the world to maintain stability. That’s what this trip was all about: having India cooperate much more with the United States, be closer with the United States, Vietnam being closer with the United States. It’s not about containing China; it’s about having a stable base in the Indo-Pacific,” the US President added.
