Arab League Urges UN to Protect Palestinians and Opposes Violations in Jerusalem

Cairo:The Arab League Council has urged the UN Security Council to take responsibility for maintaining global peace and security by adopting a resolution to ensure international protection for the Palestinian people. This call was made during an extraordinary session held at the League's General Secretariat in Cairo, initiated by the State of Palestine.

According to Qatar News Agency, the Council requested the UNSC to enforce relevant UN resolutions, including those affirming the applicability of the Fourth Geneva Convention to the occupied Palestinian territories and addressing Israel's settlement policies. The Council also asked for a resolution under Chapter VII of the UN Charter to compel Israel to comply with resolutions on the Palestinian issue, cease aggression, and adhere to International Court of Justice orders.

The Arab League stressed the importance of joint Arab action to protect Palestinians, advocating for the use of defense mechanisms under the Joint Defense and Economic Cooperation Treaty. It highlighted the need for an effective international protection system via a UN General Assembly emergency special session.

The Council urged the High Contracting Parties to the Fourth Geneva Convention to intervene against Israeli settler actions harming Palestinians. It emphasized enforcing Arab summit resolutions to boycott firms in Israeli settlements and blacklisting organizations on Arab terrorism lists.

The Council condemned violence by Israeli settlers against Palestinian farmers in the West Bank, including the destruction of olive trees. It reiterated that such acts infringe on Palestinians' rights to their land.

Any unilateral decision altering the legal status of Jerusalem, such as opening diplomatic missions, was deemed unacceptable by the Council. It condemned Colombia's intention to open an embassy in Jerusalem, urging it to reverse the decision, and warned of consequences for Arab-Colombian relations.

The Council called for measures against any nation recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital, emphasizing the need for continued monitoring of such violations. It reaffirmed East Jerusalem as occupied Palestinian territory and praised Britain's stance on Jerusalem's status and support for sanctions on Israeli settlements.

Finally, the Council reiterated the right of Palestinian refugees to return according to UNGA Resolution 194, and highlighted the role of UNRWA in providing services in occupied territories. It called for the Arab Group in New York to ensure the resolution's implementation and for the League's secretary-general to report on progress.
