Arab League Gives Priority to Mental Health and Combating Narcotics

Arab League has asserted that it gives top priorities to the topic of mental health and combating narcotics.

In a statement on the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking which is marked on Jun. 26, every year, Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the Social Affairs Sector of the League of Arab States Haifa Abu Ghazala pointed to the resolution No. 11 issued by the 54th session of Arab Health Ministers Council held in March 2021 under which the guiding law on the protection of the rights of people with mental disorder, people who have quit drug abuse, as well as those who want to quit was adopted and circulated to the Arab member states to further use it as a guideline in setting their national laws.

The Regional Framework for the Arab States 2023-2028, signed by the Secretary-General of Arab League and Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) on Mar. 26, 2023, at the headquarters of Arab League, is a strategic framework for cooperation between UNODC and Arab League, Abu Ghazala noted, adding that the document highlights the need for a flexible and cooperative approach that underpins boosting the multi-faceted cooperation and partnership at all levels.
