Al Shomos wins Local Thoroughbred Trophy wrapping up Al Uqda Seasons

The Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club (QREC) organised the 17th and last race meeting in the 2022-23 season calendar of the Al Uqda Racecourse on Saturday, 25 February 2023. In the day’s seventh and feature race, Mubarak Bin Saeed Aljafai Al Naimi’s homebred Al Shomos (QA) (Shamardal x Gulbarg) built on her runner-up effort last time out for trainer Ahmed Kobeissi as she went one better to land the Local Thoroughbred Trophy under jockey Jefferson Smith, who doubled up, as he rode the 8YO mare to win the 1400m contest for 4YO+ by two and a half lengths. The Saeed Ibrahim Saeed Al Malki-owned and Hadi Al Ramzani-trained Shaman Bu Thaila (QA) (Soviet Secret) was the runner-up under jockey Jerome Moutard. The Alanoud Khalifa Al Malki-owned and trained Al Harqah (QA) (Storm Account) was further two lengths behind in third under jockey Ivan Rossi.

Abdulaziz Jassim Al Boenain, Al Uqda Complex Manager, presented the trophies to the winners.

Mutahaffiz

The Sabhea Awad Ibrahim-owned Mutahaffiz (QA) (AF AlBahar x Al Etlalah), on third career start, got off the mark with a one and a half-length win for trainer Mohamed Khaled Elahmed and jockey Anas Al Seyabi in the day’s opener, a 1400m Maiden for 4-6YO Local Purebred Arabians

Posuelo Py

Mohammed Khalifa Al Sowaidi’s Posuelo Py (FR) (AF AlBahar x La Ranna PY) recorded an easy win as he took the 1400m Novice for 4YO+ Purebred Arabians by two lengths and a quarter under jockey Hugo Besnier for trainer Hamad Al Jehani.

Hercule

In the colours of Nasser Essa Al Kuwari, Hercule (QA) (Trade Storm x Mixigreen) proved much the best in the 1400m Handicap (0-70) for 4YO+ Local Thoroughbreds for trainer Mohammed Ghazali, drawing five lengths clear under jockey Abdulla Faisal.

Nano Toro

Hassan Ali Alabdulmalik’s homebred Nano Toro (FR) (Toronado x Nawarah) shed her maiden tag on fourth career start with a good win in the 1400m Handicap (0-75) for 3YO Thoroughbreds. Jockey Jefferson Smith got a good tune out of the Debbie Mountain-trained filly, as she won by two and three-quarter lengths.

Gubbass

Al Wasmiyah Farm’s Gubbass (IRE) (Mehmas x Vida Amorosa), on Al Uqda debut, won the 1400m Graduation for 4YO+ Thoroughbreds. The Georges Mikhalides-trained 4YO gelding was partnered by jockey Soufiane Saadi to a one and a half-length victory.

Hareeb

H.E. Sheikha Iman Bint Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Thani’s Hareeb (FR) (Mared Al Sahra x Princesse Monlau), who had never been outside the top three in any of his eight races, scored his second win in the ninth as he took the 2300m Handicap (0-95) for 5YO+ Purebred Arabians by two and a half lengths for trainer Rudy Nerbonne and under jockey Soufiane Saadi, who recorded a quick-fire double.
