5.7 Magnitude Quake Hits Kuril Islands East of Russia

An earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale hit off the coast of the Kuril Islands in the Far East of Russia.

The Institute of Physics of the Earth (IPE), part of Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), reported that the epicenter of the earthquake occurred at a depth of 66 km in the Pacific Ocean, 123 km southeast of Iturup Island.

The Russian Ministry of Emergencies in Sakhalin Province stated that residents of a number of villages on Iturup Island felt successive earthquakes, confirming that they did not result in injuries or loss of life.

Earthquakes regularly strike different parts of the Pacific belt, including the Kuril Islands, Known for frequent volcanic and seismic activity.

These islands contain about 100 volcanoes, including 39 active volcanoes. There are also sources and lakes of hot mineral water, and in addition to this, there are more than 60 volcanoes hidden under the surface of the water.
