5.5-Magnitude Earthquake Rocks Wide Area in Northeastern Japan

An earthquake measuring 5.5 magnitude on the Richter scale rocked a wide area in northeastern Japan Tuesday morning.

The earthquake occurred near Fukushima Prefecture.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 60 km in waters off Miyagi Prefecture, stressing that no abnormalities have been reported at the Onagawa nuclear plant, near Ishinomaki, The JMA said that the earthquake is unlikely to produce tsunami waves, and there have been no reports of injuries or damage so far.

Japan is located at the meeting point of four tectonic plates, making it particularly vulnerable to seismic activity. It is also home to 100 active volcanoes.

In 2011, an earthquake with a magnitude of 9.0 on the Richter scale along with a tsunami, killed more than 15,000 people and caused a disaster at the Japanese Fukushima nuclear plant.
